Getting ready for a day of fishing or even a weekend or week long fishing trip can be difficult. Depending on how far you are traveling and how far you will be away from civilization, you need to make sure that you're properly equipped. While it's pretty apparent that you're going to need a fishing pole or two, as well as some tackle, what about all those things that may have slipped your mind when packing. There's so many small items that can make a big difference in your fishing trip, but they're too often forgotten, especially since some are not always needed.
The first fishing supply that is handy to have while out fishing is a net. Whether you're on a boat or on the shore, having a net can make life a lot easier. As the fish gets close, you can simply scoop it up, rather than wrestling with it until it's in your hands. You should never leave home without a good pair of needle nose pliers either. They can be quite useful in removing a hook without injuring yourself in the process.
For some reason most fisherman forget something very crucial to their success; Extra fishing line and a spare reel. There's nothing more frustrating than having a reel that gets jammed up, or you don't have enough line. Bring along an extra reel and line so that when you run into a snag, you don't have to spend an hour trying to figure out how to fix the mess.
An assortment of lures and bait can also be helpful. While we all have our favorite lures, there are days when no matter what we try, they just don't work. Try switching them out for something else since what works one day, may not work another. As the weather changes, fish see the bait differently and respond to it in a different way so you have to be able to adapt to their changing appetites.
Make sure to think about the environment that you will be fishing is as well. Will you need bug spray, a rain coat, an extra sweater? There's nothing worse than being cold and uncomfortable when you're out fishing, so make sure to bring along appropriate attire for the trip. Make sure to take along a first aid kit for minor cuts and scratches, a cell phone and some matches. While it's unlikely that anything bad will happen, there's no guarantee.
If you're fishing from a boat, make sure to always take a life jacket and wear it faithfully. Too many good fisherman have been lost after falling out of a boat or when the boat springs a leak. If you're fishing in cold water, a survival suit is even better. Don't forget a holder for your rod as well, so that when you want to take a bite of your lunch or a sip of coffee, you don't lose the rod.
Being prepared for your fishing trip will make all the difference when it comes to actually being successful. No one plans to fail, but often fisherman fail to plan and that's why they don't catch anything or they find themselves in trouble.
